Paint decided. Now, on to the staircase

Confirmed the paint colors this morning. For your viewing pleasure:

We also talked (and talked, and talked) about our staircase. You'd think a staircase is pretty straightforward. It's stairs, right? And a handrail. Well I'm here to tell you it's decidedly not a straightforward project. Because here's what you have to figure out:

  • Treads and risers. Both stained? Treads stained, risers painted? Both painted? We're doing both stained.
  • Balusters. Iron? Wood? Something else? What shape? All the same or different? We're doing wood. Not quite sure about the shape.
  • Newel post. Again, iron? Wood (and if yes, is that stained, or painted, or a little of both)? Squared or rounded? Fluted perhaps? We have no idea what we're doing here.
  • Tread edge. Bull-nose? Blunt? Something else? Blunt edge is the winner for the Southern Reno family!
  • Handrail. There are basically, oh, infinite options. The painted v. stained debate (if you choose wood!) is but the beginning of this particular journey. Apparently we have a 'catalog' coming our way, so stay tuned.
  • Flared bottom step (optional...and we took the option). Rounded? Squared? And do you want your newel post starting on this step, or the next one up? Or start on one and continue it on the other? Or perhaps it starts on the floor?
I think that's it. It'll be a beautiful staircase, I just know it. Can't wait to see how it all turns out!
